WHAT IS THE LEGION OF MARY
It is the largest apostolic organization of lay people in the Catholic Church with
well over 2 million active members in most every country of the world. It was founded by Frank Duff in Dublin, Ireland on September 7, 1921 and will soon be celebrating its centennial in 2021. It has been active in the United States since 1931, has been approved by many popes including St. Pope John Paul II, and endorsed by the Second Vatican Council.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE LEGION OF MARY
The primary purpose of the Legion of Mary is the glory of God through the sanctification of its members developed by prayer and the performance of apostolic works.
WHAT ARE THE WORKS OF THE LEGION OF MARY
Emphasis is on the Works of Mercy: visiting the sick, door-to-door evangelization, Apostolate to the crowd, distributing Catholic literature specially the church bulletin, encouraging fallen away Catholics to return to the practice of their faith, visiting families to see if children have been baptized, teaching RCIA and other religious education classes, promoting the practice of daily Mass and devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, bringing the Pilgrim Virgin statue of the Blessed Mother to houses to spread devotion to the Rosary, Enthronement of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the homes, prison ministry.
The Legion of Mary seeks to increase people’s knowledge, faith and love of God and at the same time increase the faith and holiness of its own members through prayer and service to our Lord, having Mary as its Model.
HOW DO I BECOME A MEMBER OF THE LEGION OF MARY
By being a guest at a meeting. You can also go as a guest on one of the work assignments with an experienced Legion of Mary member. What you need is to sacrifice a little bit of your time and energy for the glory of God.
A new member starts on a probationary period of 3 months and proceeds to become an active member after continuous attendance.
WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR ACTIVE MEMBERSHIP
Active membership is open to all Catholic men and women. Those over 18 yrs. of age belong to the Senior Praesidium, those under 18 in Junior Praesidium. There is an obligation to be willing to fulfill the duties which membership in the Legion involves.
WHEN AND WHERE IS THE LEGION OF MARY MEETING
The Praesidium meeting is held at St. Margaret Mary Church Baptismal Chapel, by the front door, every Saturday after the 8:00 AM Mass. We hope the Holy Spirit will lead you there.
